Choice highlights:

Kim Kardashian is emblematic of the shallowness of American culture in the first two decades of the new millennium. While some cultural critics call her the prime avatar of the “famous for being famous” faux celebrity crowd, she along with Paris Hilton is a new breed of cat whose celebrity comes from the release of a sex tape and the canny exploitation of the resulting publicity. Like her good friend Miss Hilton (their relationship predates Kim’s “celebrity”, Kardashian is possessed of photogenic good looks but is short of any other discernible talents outside of the bedroom. Both expanded their celebrity by becoming reality TV “stars”.

Porn pioneer Harry Reems has commented how surprised he is at how porn stars like Jenna Jameson are accepted now in mainstream culture. His life was ruined by his participation in porn in its “Golden Years”. As for Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, the release (accidental or not-so-accidental) of boudoir tapes didn’t result in shame but celebration. America like ancient Rome seems to have shuffled off the moral coil of virtue of the Republic and is now enjoying its Imperial self in an orgy of ignominy. It’s always more fun on the toboggan ride down the hill than it was schlepping up it in the first place.

Both are/were “famous for being famous.” I am pretty sure that up until the 1970 cencus ”professional bachelor” was a real occupation (not really but it definitely was a job that MANY men took seriously) and now we just watch that shit on TV. What is the difference between the Kardashians playing CHARACTERS (seriously people do you really think this shit isn’t scripted?) and George Clooney yet again playing an alienated upper-middle class White guy? Oh because George has an Oscar and Kim made a sex tape? Give me a break.

I’m glad that someone is calling them out. Here is a Jezebel article about “hipster racists” which is super hilarious. Here is an article from their brother (?) site Deadspin about all the racist tweets tweeted (omg I am going to kill myself for actually typing “tweets tweeted”) when Joel Ward scored the game-winning goal to kick Boston out of the Stanley Cup championship. I am glad they posted those fuckers names and pictures.

I was not even surprised by either of these articles because everybody knows that some of the most racist people in the world are privileged white kids and people from Boston. (like seriously Boston y’all really need to chill out)

Okay I’m going to go back to watching The Game. (if you don’t know what that is you’re probably a racist….just kidding but no really)

Political Spat of the Day: Mitt Romney’s wife Ann joined Twitter this week to publicly refute DNC adviser Hilary Rosen’s assertion on CNN that, “Guess what, his wife has actually never worked a day in her life.”

“I made a choice to stay home and raise five boys,” reads Romney’s first tweet, posted shortly after Rosen’s comments aired. “Believe me, it was hard work.”

The Obama campaign jumped to Romney’s defense.

“I could not disagree with Hilary Rosen any more strongly. Her comments were wrong and family should be off limits. She should apologize,” tweeted Obama campaign manager Jim Messina.

Rosen responded via Twitter: “I’ve nothing against @AnnRomney. I just don’t want Mitt using her as an expert on women struggling $ to support their family. She isn’t.”

While no Betty White, Romney has 18,000 followers and counting.

Is the point that Rosen makes right? I think so. In order to court female voters Mitt is contantly looking to his wife’s experiences as the basis of his policy. Now I’m not saying that being a stay at home mom is not a real job. That is completely ignorant and that attitude (one that I think many second-wave feminists helped to contribute to) that domestic labor is somehow less important or less “real” then something in the formal economy has hurt women for centuries. Just watch one episode of 19 Kids and Counting and you can see that raising children and minding the home is incredibly difficult. On the other hand being a rich white lady with the staff and support that comes with that does raise eyebrows. Does Ann’s experiences as a stay at home mom compare to a middle class woman? Possibly in some ways, but I am going to guess that they are about as similar as working in an archives and managing a hedge fund. I mean, yeah we both work for wages and you have to have pretty good people skills but the pay, benefits, atmosphere and resources are totally different. I am sure that Ann has never cut a coupon in her life. I am sure she doesn’t do her own grocery shopping. Usually when one parent stays at home, they are doing so at a sacrafice to their finances something that Ann would have no concept of. If she and Mitt want to catch the latest Nicholas Sparks cheesy romantic shitfest, she can just hire a sitter or maybe even has nannies. Mocking her because she is a stay-at-home mom is really not okay. Mocking her because Mitt uses his wife to show that he is “down with lady’s problems” when really she has no idea what a stuggling woman goes through. Well I think that is prefectly acceptable.

At Duke, I write for Develle Dish, the campus feminist blog. This is my friend Neha. She was part of an exhibition that Develle Dish put together which features victims of sexual assault holding up signs with words said to them by their rapist or the reactions of their friends after they were raped.

My friend Pruitt, who has been mentioned on this blog before, is also pictured. The photos were taken by Kristin Oakley. The entire gallery can be viewed here. It’s powerful and horrible stuff.

This is really really hard to look at, but I think that everyone needs to look at this. Great example of intersectionality. Using a variety of experiences to provide one very powerful statement these pictures remind us of the ways that both our actions and our inaction contribute to college rape culture. This culture turns victims into “accusers” and RAPISTS into “that misunderstood person” making it hard for anyone to come forward. I also like that the gender of the assaulter is left unanimous.
